Using Laws.Africa’s technology to bolster Kenya’s legal framework
The Twenty-fourth Annual Supplement to the Laws of Kenya was successfully launched, providing a comprehensive and up-to-date legal framework. Digitising the laws made them universally accessible, promoting transparency, accountability, and inclusivity. To update Kenya’s legislation for the first time in many decades, Laws.Africa, through their Indigo Legislation Studio, provided a robust solution to Kenya Law’s problem. Indigo Legislation Studio is a legislation digitisation platform that simplifies the maintenance, updating, and publishing of legislation collections for various formats.
C4ADS partnered with Laws.Africa to digitise African gazettes to support the disruption of illicit networks
Electronic datasets allow analysts to identify transnational criminal organizations, screen activities for corruption, and recover stolen assets. The digitization of previously inaccessible electronic data, including government gazettes, is revolutionizing the role of publicly available information in disrupting illicit networks.
Digitising Tanzania's Legislation: A Collaboration Between Laws.Africa and Tanzania's Attorney General's Office
Transforming Tanzania's Legal System: Laws.Africa, in collaboration with Tanzania's Attorney General's Office, is revolutionizing legal transparency through the digitization of legal statutes. This innovative project, underpinned by the Indigo Legislation Platform, addresses critical challenges in updating legislation in Tanzania. With the support of GIZ and a strong focus on local capacity building, approximately 40% of Tanzania's legislation from 2002 to date, has been digitized since the project's inception in July 2023. This initiative not only enhances public access to current laws but also sets a sustainable model for managing and disseminating digital and print legislation for other African and developing countries.
Transforming Access to Legal Information in Tanzania
In a significant stride for the digitization of law in Africa, the year 2023 has been marked by a landmark collaboration in Tanzania. Spearheaded by the collective efforts of the Tanzania Judiciary, the Office of the Attorney General, and the Law Reform Commission, this initiative signifies a major leap in making legal information publicly accessible. With the technical expertise and facilitation of AfricanLII and Laws.Africa, supported by the GIZ's "Rule of Law and Judiciary" project, this collaboration is a testament to the power of partnership in transforming legal landscapes.
This initiative, strongly backed by the Ministry of Constitutional and Legal Affairs of Tanzania (MoCLA) and endorsed by the Minister of Constitutional and Legal Affairs Dr. Ndumbaro, reflects a profound government commitment to advancing legal accessibility. It underscores a shared vision: to create a transparent, accessible, and efficient legal system, not only for Tanzania but as a model for the entire African continent.
